The story

Oak Creek Canyon, Arizona – 2026

Oak Creek Canyon from straight overhead

Around 5:35 in the evening I put the drone up over State Route 89A in Oak Creek Canyon, north of Slide Rock. From the ground it’s just the drive. From straight overhead the road becomes one dark line snaking through the trees, and that shape is what made me stop.

The cars strung along it are strangers, people heading up or down the canyon at the end of the day, each one a small mark of scale against the forest.

This stretch is part of the Oak Creek Canyon Scenic Drive, a 15-mile run of 89A between Sedona and Flagstaff. You usually see it through a windshield. This is the view the road never gives you.
