Volcán de Fuego erupting at blue hour, shot handheld from the first landing after climbing Acatenango the same day, with hikers on the ridge for scale.
Volcán de Fuego, Guatemala – November 2025
Getting here is the hardest hiking I have ever done. You climb Acatenango, you get about thirty minutes, and then you go again for Fuego, trying to beat the sun down. This frame is the payoff we were after.
Once we were up there it went off like clockwork, every ten or fifteen minutes. The flash catches your eyes first. A second later the boom arrives, and you do not really hear it. You feel it land in your chest.
The figures on the ridge are part of my group and part of somebody else’s. I kept them in because without them you have no idea how big any of this is.
We hauled all kinds of gear up there. By the time it mattered I was too cold and too spent to use any of it, so this is handheld on a Nikon Zf with the 24mm f/1.8.
