Næs, Allinge, Bornholm, Denmark – August 2026
Næs sits on the southern edge of Allinge, where the coast path runs down toward Sandkås. This was ten to four on a bright afternoon, near the end of a week where we swam along this coast every chance we got.
The orange is lichen. It grows in a narrow band above the waterline, high enough to escape being submerged, low enough that sea spray keeps it damp, and it stops dead where the water starts. That hard line between the orange and the blue is the whole reason I pulled over. Underneath it is granite around 1.7 billion years old. Bornholm is split down the middle geologically, ancient granite in the north and sandstone roughly 500 million years old in the south, and this is the old end.
The ladder at the right looked absurd to me when I framed the shot, a piece of handrail bolted to a rock in the middle of nowhere. It makes sense once you have swum here. Getting in is easy, you jump. Getting out is the problem, because wet granite under lichen gives you nothing to grip and nothing to stand on. The ladders on this coast are there for the way back.
