Lake Manly, Death Valley – 2026

This is the print where Death Valley plays a trick on your eyes. Shot from the air on March 28, 2026, Badwater Road runs straight down the center of the frame and splits the landscape into two scenes that look like they belong on different planets. To the west, the salt-crusted floor of Badwater Basin looks freshly covered in snow, still holding water from the rare 2026 reflooding. To the east, the warm, weathered alluvial fans wash down from the Black Mountains in deep desert browns, with the Gower Gulch outflow visible at the upper right.

Captured with a DJI Mavic 3 Pro at roughly 8 a.m., when the morning light had risen high enough to flatten shadows and turn the salt into something closer to a frozen lake than a desert basin. From the ground, the contrast is striking. From the air, it looks like a weather phenomenon you can’t quite explain.
