San Pedro La Laguna, Guatemala – November 2025

San Pedro La Laguna sits on the southwest shore of Lake Atitlán at 1,610 meters, under Volcán San Pedro. More than nine in ten people here are Tz’utujil Maya, and Tz’utujil is still the language you hear on the street.

The stairs run up between two buildings, every step painted in bands of color. Shot from the bottom looking up, so the bands stack away from you and the walls squeeze in from both sides. The woman climbing with her dog gives you the scale.

San Pedro is a weaving town. People still work on backstrap looms here, and the steps read like a length of cloth somebody laid up the hill.
