Devil’s Bridge in the first light of morning

We started up the trail in pitch black, getting by with a couple of flashlights and the AllTrails app to keep us on route. By the time we reached the arch, the sky was starting to brighten, a few minutes before the sun came up.

With the sun still below the horizon, the light was all indirect: an even glow across the whole valley with no hard shadows. That’s when the color of the rock comes through, deep orange on the arch against the pale cliffs in the distance. I stood off to the side with the sun on my right while a few people from our group walked out onto the span.

Despite the name, Devil’s Bridge is technically an arch, not a bridge. Either way, standing on it at dawn is worth the climb in the dark.
