Looking straight down at Sandkås beach on Bornholm at sunrise, where pale sand, a spine of rock and clear Baltic water sort themselves into bands.

Sandkås, Bornholm, Denmark – August 2026

Jet lag got me at four in the morning, so I gave up on sleeping and walked across the road to the beach. Sandkås is the one proper bathing beach on this stretch of coast, lined with guesthouses and summer houses, and at that hour it was empty. This is a few minutes before six, looking straight down.

From above the coast sorts itself into bands. A path, then scrub, then pale sand, then rock running out into the water like a spine, then the water itself going from clear green to navy. The Baltic helps. It is brackish rather than properly salty, roughly a fifth as salty as the ocean, and it has almost no tide, so the line where the water meets the sand sits more or less where it always sits.

Bornholm carries two nicknames in Danish. Solskinsøen, the sunshine island, for its weather. Klippeøen, the rock island, for its geology. Standing on that beach before six in the morning, jet lagged and glad of it, you get both of them in one frame.
