Belén

Sunset on the cobblestones of Antigua Guatemala, shot from ground level outside the Capilla de Nuestra Señora de Belén with the hills closing the end of the street.

Antigua Guatemala – November 2025

The yellow façade on the left is the Capilla de Nuestra Señora de Belén. Antigua was founded in 1543 and ran as the capital of the Captaincy General of Guatemala for 230 years, until the Santa Marta earthquakes of 1773 emptied it out and the Crown moved the seat of government somewhere safer. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.

What gets me about the place is the ground. The roads are original, and they are most of the reason Antigua feels the way it feels. That is why I am lying on them in this frame. Shot low, so the cobbles run the whole length of the picture and you understand you are looking at something old before you look at anything else.

Sunset, a tuk tuk and a motorbike coming toward camera, the hills closing off the end of the street. Ordinary evening traffic on a road that has been there a very long time.
