We drove up to Flagstaff for a nice dinner since the local spots were all booked. It had just rained, and the whole street was reflecting the neon.

Modern towns have gotten so gray. Everything is muted and square, like we took the color, taste and design out of our lives on purpose. Whenever I come across a place that has held on to its classic style and architecture, I jump at the chance to preserve it in a photograph.

The Hotel Monte Vista opened on New Year’s Day 1927, and its rooftop sign still lights up the corner downtown. Add the green glow of the Mountain Sports sign and the wet pavement, and the whole corner comes alive.
