The story

Courthouse Butte, Sedona, Arizona – 2026

Courthouse Butte, a happy accident in camera

This one was an accident. I was shooting Courthouse Butte at night, and partway through the exposure I picked up the tripod and reframed on another range off to the left. The camera kept recording the whole time.

What came out is a ghostly second landscape printed in the sky just above the butte. The stars dragged along with it and turned into streaks that look like dust and scratches on an old film negative. It wasn’t the frame I was going for, and it ended up being one I love.

Night shoots in Sedona are a photographer’s dream. The city has a lighting ordinance, and in 2014 it was named an International Dark Sky Community. Between that and the red rock monuments, there are stars for days.
