The story

Tejn, Bornholm, Denmark – August 2026

Tejn is a working fishing harbour on the north-east coast of Bornholm, just down the road from Allinge. About 750 people live here. The fleet peaked in the 1970s and 80s and has been shrinking ever since, and you can feel that on a Sunday evening. One woman, one dog, and nobody else out.

The architecture is what made me stop. Low houses, tile roofs, painted colors that would get argued about anywhere else, all of it sitting the way it has sat for a long time. It looks like you stepped into the past. Life here is slow and it is intentional, which is close to the opposite of what most of us have got used to.

The island has actually committed to that. In 2017 Bornholm became the first place in Europe named a World Craft Region by the World Crafts Council, on the strength of its glassblowers, ceramicists and workshops. It is a place that decided out loud to keep making things slowly, by hand, and the streets look like it.
