Mørkgonga, Krokskogen, Norway – August 2026
We wanted a day out of Oslo, so we walked up toward Mørkgonga, a split in the lava plate that covers Krokskogen, where the ground opens and the view runs out over Steinsfjorden. This is the forest that starts where the city stops.
Roughly two million sheep are turned loose across Norway every summer. No fences, no pasture, just open forest and hill until somebody comes to collect them in the autumn. Separately, the Outdoor Recreation Act of 1957 is why anyone can walk through country like this at all. Between the two we ended up on the same trail.
It was a Friday morning and nobody else was out, so I wasn’t expecting to meet anything. We startled each other, and then they just stood there in the roots looking at me. The whole thing looked like a scene out of Narnia.
