The story

Santa Cruz La Laguna, Lake Atitlán, Guatemala – November 2025

There are no roads into Santa Cruz La Laguna. You get there by boat, and the lanchas that run the shoreline are the buses, the freight and the taxi service all at once. This was shot off the dock in front of the Free Cerveza hostel, looking out at the end of the day.

Atitlán is the deepest lake in Central America at around 340 meters, sitting at 1,562 meters above sea level. It fills the caldera left by the Los Chocoyos eruption roughly 79,500 years ago, an event that spread ash from Florida to Ecuador. Three volcanoes stand along the southern rim.

None of that is why I made the picture. The whole sky went over at once, the water took the color, and a boat happened to be out there crossing it.
