The story

Lava Trails Base Camp, Guatemala – November 2025

This is base camp for Lava Trails, the outfit that took us up the mountain. We stopped here first to gear up. This is what was behind me while everybody sorted out packs.

I am fascinated by how different countries handle bathrooms across the whole socioeconomic range. And the word just made me laugh. Somebody painted TOILET on the wall in careful white letters, and that was that.

The rest is why I actually raised the camera. Hard shadow cutting a clean diagonal straight through the word, graphic blocks of color, a red basin doing all the work in the corner, and cotton candy clouds piled up in a deep blue sky.
