The story

Volcán Acatenango, Guatemala – November 2025

This is base camp on Acatenango at sunrise, the morning after we hiked Fuego. Acatenango’s high point is 3,976 meters, a little over 13,000 feet, and Fuego is the peak right next door. You camp up there and you spend the night listening to it.

This was the last morning, right before we started down. The sky refused to hold still. Cloud poured up through the pines and pulled back again, and every few seconds the whole scene was a different photograph with a different color palette. Wait ten seconds and the one you were looking at is gone.

This is one of those seconds.
