The story

Mojave National Preserve, California – 2019

I kept coming back to the Joshua trees scattered across the Mojave. The problem was always the sky. Every frame put those silhouettes against clean desert blue, and blue reads as cool. None of it carried what it actually felt like to stand out there in the middle of summer.

So I stopped treating this as a straight photograph. This one is a mixed media composite. The tree is lifted off its original background and set against a flat field of red. The color does two jobs at once: it strips away everything competing with the shape of the tree, and it puts the heat back into a frame that a blue sky had taken it out of.

A desert piece for anyone who wants the temperature in the room, not just the landscape on the wall.
