This was the first frame of the morning. Captured at 6:20 a.m. on March 28, 2026, on arrival at the basin, well before any visible sun rays had reached the mountains or the water. A single deep blue had saturated everything: sky, ridge, salt flat, reflection. All of it pulled into one near-monochromatic scene.

The Black Mountains sit in deep shadow on the right, their full ridgeline mirrored in the glass-still water of the rare 2026 reflooding. No clouds in the sky. No figures on the flats. No warmth anywhere yet. Just the quiet of a desert basin in the minutes before sunrise, holding its breath while the sun made its slow climb up the far side of the mountains. Shot on a Nikon Zf with the 24mm f/1.8 Nikkor and a circular polarizer, in the earliest light the morning would allow.

This is the blue hour print of the Lake Manly Series, for anyone drawn to monochrome, stillness, and the few minutes each morning when a landscape exists before it remembers it has color.
