Captured at sunrise on March 28, 2026, this frame freezes a rare moment at Badwater Basin during one of its brief returns to lake. After record-breaking rainfall in late 2025 transformed the salt flats into a shallow inland sea, getting there meant a 3 a.m. start to be in position before first light. Shot on a Nikon Zf with the 24mm f/1.8 Nikkor and a circular polarizer to cut just enough surface glare for the reflection to hold.
By 7 a.m. the wind had died completely. No sound, no movement, no clear line between where the land stopped and the sky began. Two strangers had wandered out onto the flats just far enough to give the scene its scale — proof that the impossible flatness of the water and the towering peaks of the Panamint and Black Mountain ranges actually existed in the same place. Soft alpenglow lit the western range while the eastern range held cool shadow, balancing the composition almost on its own.
